Under general supervision and in accordance with recommended method, carries out specimen collection duties for all proper specimens and assists the medical technologist/technician in the efficiency of CLIA waived tests. Maintains total and accurate records for specimens. Performs all appropriate computer functions essential to process client specimens in an effective way as direct and needed. Function as a courier for the MHMH Laboratory. Performs clerical, non-technical responsibilities for all areas of the MHMH Lab.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Level of understanding comparable to that generally gotten through Conclusion of high school.
- Certification as a Phlebotomy Professional (ASPT, ASCP) chosen.
- Must possess a legitimate Michigan Driver’s License free of driving violations for at least 2 years.
- Physically able to adapt to almost constant standing, walking, along with light lifting, reaching, and bending.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to blood and/or body fluids, exposure to dangerous chemicals, pharmaceuticals or nuclear exposures, medium lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, sporadic keyboarding, sitting and standing, utilization of individual protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns, boots, etc.).

PARTICULAR TASKS Performs phlebotomy and all other appropriate specimen collections, observing all suitable collection techniques in a safe, aseptic and economical manner observing all appropriate procedures.
- Provides customer-driven and patient-focused care to the patients and consumers of Munson Health care Manistee Hospital. Is polite in all situations. Shows a positive attitude in every encounter. Responses telephones showing proper telephone skills.
- Under the guidance of Medical Technologists/Technicians discovers and performs CLIA waived testing for proper analyses. Assists Medical Technologists/Technicians in specimen handling and processing as directed and needed.
- Utilizes the health center computer system register patients/specimens as required. Gets in diagnostic test orders to the computer system, prints and guarantees the proper identification and labeling of specimens.
- Frequently look for and receives computer printed test appropriations. Determines and follows most medically appropriate and affordable collection strategy provide patient areas and timed collection requirements. Reacts to STAT requests and processes them in accordance with lab procedures.
- Serves As the Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital (MHMH) Lab Courier. Drives a MHMH car and offers “consumer focused” service to the referring customers of the MHMH laboratory. Picks-up and delivers supplies, specimens, mail, and other products in a timely manner.
- Instruct patients regarding the specimen collection process and pre-laboratory preparation/handling of specimens.
- Uses prudent judgment in the observation of patients prior to, throughout, and following specimen collection. Detects and identifies any potential unfavorable effects of specimen collection and instantly alerts nursing/medical associates in the event of an unfavorable response.
- Advises patients concerning unique collection procedures (e.g. paternity testing, drug/alcohol screening and testing) and follows procedures particular to these collections as required.
- Performs appropriate clerical duties supporting the smooth and reliable operation of all sections of the MHMH Laboratory. This consists of, however is not limited to report assembly, printing, faxing, mailing, and filing of all lab interactions, information, patient and basic reports, signs up patients/specimens, goes into laboratory orders and charges as proper.
- Cleans, preserves and renews as necessary all suitable workspace and devices as appointed. This includes the reception desk location, waiting area, stockroom, and recommendation work processing area, phlebotomy trays, MHMH vehicle, and outreach collection locations.
- Assists in the acquisition of pathology and cytology specimens from submitting departments/customers.
- Reviews, recognizes with, and abide by all MHMH and Laboratory guidelines, policies, procedures, procedures, policies, and strategies including, but not restricted to: security, associate health, infection control, chemical health, hazardous waste, bioterrorism, emergency situations, and confidentiality.
- Participates in MHMH and lab education programs and meetings. Attends all mandatory in-service programs. Applies TJC, PI ideas, approaches, and concepts throughout the efficiency of job-related activities.
- Applies CQI concepts and techniques throughout associated activities.
- Performs task duties in an ethical, certified manner constant with the organization’s values and the healthcare facility’s Corporate Compliance Program, The policies, procedures and protocols.
