GENERAL SUMMARY/ INTRODUCTION DECLARATION:
Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician greets clients, process paperwork and specimens, and logs all tests into the computer system. Performs heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on all clients to consist of:
Baby (age 0-2) Children (age 2-14) Teenagers (age 14-20) Adult (age 20-65) Older Adults (
65 years)
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greets patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.
- Logs into the computer system, all tests checked off on the requisition, making sure all essential information and comments are included in the process.
- Produces bar code labels to affix to specimens after collection.
- Carries out heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on populations defined above, utilizing aseptic and correct strategies.
- Makes certain that specimens are appropriately labels and collected.
- Maintains appropriate documentation and procedures specific to the FXB Laboratory.
- Prepares the blood drawing location for patients, making sure an appropriate stock of supplies is kept which the location is kept in a tidy and orderly manner.
- Accountable for preserving a safe workspace and adhering to all security, Infection Control, and OSHA standards and policies.
- Demonstrates professional client service skills whenever connecting with a consumer.
- Carries out assistance services as assigned and other responsibilities as needed.
- Is responsible for all other duties and responsibilities required for the day to day operations of the laboratory consisting of security and compliance OSHA.
- Accountable to be knowledgeable about Joint Commission National Patient Security Goals and to adhere to BWH Healthcare facility and Laboratory policies and procedures
Certifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Needs a high school diploma.
A couple of years prior experience, however will train.
Standing and walking 80% of the time.
ABILITIES/ CAPABILITIES/ PROFICIENCIES REQUIRED:
Should have excellent communication abilities and the ability to make the client unwinded and comfy.
Should be able to perform heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on populations previously specified.
Should have capability to work well in a fast paced environment.
Should have good organizational abilities and be flexible to change schedule in accordance with the needs of the laboratory.
Must have the capability to analyze laboratory appropriations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Hectic laboratory environment.
Direct exposure to smells, contagious products and other dangerous compounds.
