Cleanliness is of upmost importance. Its necessary to prevent infections. One of the leading causes of death in hospitals is patients contracting an infection that is not related to the reason they came to the hospital in the first place. If the equipment used to draw blood is not sterilized properly, it is possible to give the patient an infection.

Infection prevention is not the only reason why cleanliness is important. If a blood sample becomes contaminated, it can cause the doctor to make a wrong diagnosis. This could be deadly under certain circumstances. Like any job in the medical profession, people’s lives are at stake.

Proper coding and storing of the blood samples is also an important part of the job. As is the case with infections, a mislabeled sample can cause mistakes in the diagnosis of the patients disease. Just think what tragedies might happen if the patients blood samples are mixed up and someone who has cancer’s blood is mixed up with someone who has Aids.
