Phlebotomists – Why Do They Need The Phlebotomy Certification?

Phlebotomists – Why Do They Need The Phlebotomy Certification?

Phlebotomists can work in various medical offices, clinics and laboratories. Their task consists of helping doctors as well as nurses to collect blood from patients. This is practiced most often in hospitals and in blood donation campaigns.

Phlebotomy is a term that means to extract blood for testing performance or blood transfusion. The phlebotomist is a skilled technician who is professionally trained to extract blood samples from patients.

Health care field is growing rapidly, and the need to obtain the appropriate phlebotomy certification is on the rise as well. Phlebotomists are not competent to make the administration of drugs or give injections, but if it’s needed, they can perform other tasks than blood sampling, such as urine collection. They should also know the right procedures to restore a patient who may be suffering an adverse reaction to drugs or shock.

In the past, phlebotomists used to acquire operational skills during their job experience. But today, they must go through phlebotomy training programs in some centers or vocational schools to be able to extract blood from patients. This may take a full year, including training in a hospital or clinic. A certificate in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is required for such proceedings. In addition, phlebotomy should be studied in college to learn the techniques of samples testing, the extraction of blood and other body fluids, the legal aspects of the job, relationships with patients, and the practices recommended by the World Standard precautions.

The phlebotomy certification should be legalized by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists and the American Association of Medical Staff. Nonetheless, it’s only in California and the state of Louisiana where the ratification of bloodletting is required.
