In late middle ages and early contemporary Europe, definitions of blood in medical writing were slippery and adjustable: blood was at when the red fluid in human veins, a humor, a compound governing essential Galenic designs of physical modification, a waste item, a reason for corruption, a source of life, a medical cure, a serum appearing under the guise of all other physical secretions, and– after William Harvey’s discovery of its flow– the reason for one of the best medical debates of the premodern duration. Figurative uses of “blood” are even more hard to select. The term appeared in practically every sphere of life and thought, going through political, doctrinal, and familial discourses. Blood Matters checks out blood as an unique classification of inquiry and accumulates scholars who may not otherwise be in discussion. Theatrical and medical practice are found to assemble in their techniques to the regulation of blood as a source of identity and truth; medieval civic life intersects with seventeenth-century science and viewpoint; the ideas of class, race, gender, and sexuality find in the language of blood as lots of systems for distinction as for homogeneity; and fields as disparate as pedagogical theory, alchemy, phlebotomy, wet-nursing, and red wine production emerge as historically and intellectually comparable. The volume’s essays are arranged within classifications originated from middle ages and early modern understanding of blood habits– Flow, Injuries, Corruption, Proof, and Signs and Compounds– consequently offering the terms through which interdisciplinary and cross-period conversations can take place.
