I got an almost perfect phlebotomy/ venesection for the MPN Polycythemia Vera blood in a vacutainer! I am so happy about it!
I went to a new location and it was like walking into a mini heaven (as far as chemo/apheresis locations go).
It was an easy check in, she was nice when I said the only flu effects and crap feelings are related to how my meds and illness affect me. She was nice and I sat away from everyone else. There were only about four people waiting at a time.
I went back for my Vitals, I am now almost to my highest peak weight ever! I gained a lot of weight after having my son and am almost back to the peak! Yikes
My oxygen was 96%
I waited again and then got called back. I was in the last chair and it was a great place. It was as private as possible and the nurses seemed chipper and were all in synch.
The nurse expected me to have a portacath still. I let her know we had to remove it.
I gave a brief summary of what veins were good and where we had previous success on phlebotomies. She listened (Key to great care). She did the vein in the thumb again. It hurts of course because they get it in then keep scrunching it in the vein but it works.
She then used a vacutainer bottle! This is the holy grail for phlebotomies. I’ve heard of them and asked for them but not had it before.
She adjusted me and the needle to be straight and I would squeeze and you can see the blood pressure as it goes out. I looked and watched which I rarely, if ever do.
I had two ginger ales & the peanut butter & cheese crackers.
She asked me if I was feeling ok and I said, “sure”.
I think she saw something before I really felt it. All of a sudden I got the cold sweats, felt sick to my stomach and the lights seemed to get hazy and dim. I let her know and she stopped the phleb. Took my vitals, called the Doctor to see if we needed to continue for more and of course had the IV of fluids running in such a quick process.
She was amazing. She asked about how I felt and I told her. She let me know that is usually right before people pass out. I was a bit out of it and spacey.
After the bag of fluids I started to feel better and we did the vitals again. She then let me know we needed to try to finish the phlebotomy per doctors orders. I fully agreed.
We had stopped at 250 ml (it took a quick 10 minutes).
So then we started again. I got a little hazy again and slow so I just rested. When she told me I needed to call my husband to pick me up soon I forgot his name…
FORGOT MY HUSBANDS NAME!
Yikes. It took me about a minute to sort it through my mind and I let her know I get spacey and I remembered.
That was weird. She told me we would stop at 400 ML because my blood pressure was going down again. (I can’t remember the other vitals now).
So I agreed. 80% full phlebotomy! Yahoo!!!
we stopped and put in more fluids, did the vitals and I was able to walk out (use hand sanitizer) and met my husband at the doors
It does make a difference to have a phlebotomy. My head clears and I don’t itch as bad after a shower and it just really helps my quality of life.
My vitals when I left were:
BP 112/73
oxygen Saturation 100%
yahoo!
I wish you all happiness, adventures and HEALTH!
