The Phlebotomy Professional I mainly perform skin leak or venipuncture on clients of any ages for the purpose of acquiring a blood specimen for analysis in the scientific laboratory and is under the supervision of Laboratory Director/ Manager/ Manager. The PT I; 1) carries out computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical responsibilities, 2) has appropriate knowledge of the terminology of tests bought in the lab, 3) demonstrates excellent interaction skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner, 4) demonstrates proper phlebotomy method and making use of devices in collecting specimens from babies to geriatric clients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6) processes specimens for recommendation to referral laboratories, 7) stocks and orders routine products, 8) maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, fridges, freezers and work areas, 9) procedures or load specimens on automated lab instrumentation in accordance with recognized policy and procedures, 10) Might be help to Pick up samples at health center/ OR, help laboratory specialized in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, help pathology, stock, replenish materials, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product shipments, and so on. 11) other tasks or obligations might be assigned by the department manager/director.
Duties
Carries out venipuncture and skin leak on clients of all ages from newborn to geriatric in a safe, accurate, and timely manner.
Collects and processes biological specimens for lab analysis according to accepted treatment and observing proper preventative measures with possibly hazardous compounds.
Reviews and documents orders for appropriateness. Includes review and confirmation of replicate orders.
Makes sure favorable patient recognition, minimum two needed patient identifiers, prior to performing client draw. No misidentifications are permitted.
Appropriately identifies blood specimens drawn with Initials (PT1 identifier), date, and time of collection on each specimen tube.
Finishes blood attracts a timely manner, routine – within 6 minutes, hard cases – within 15 minutes, regular capillary leaks – within 10 minutes.
Procedures specimens immediately upon arrival in the laboratory and distributes to the departments.
Acknowledges issues with specimens, tries to correct problem and alerts appropriate personnel and supervisor. Files procedure.
Evaluations tracking screen regularly and deals with pending draws
Finishes any draws created 15- minutes prior to shift change.
Welcomes outpatients and processes them promptly (within 10 minutes of patient’s arrival).
Properly enters specimen details into computer system. Medical record number, name, date and time need to be confirmed with appropriation with less than 2 date mistakes each year. No medical record number or name mistakes.
Demonstrates the appropriate usage of phlebotomy devices and safety devices
Keeps the phlebotomy space and workplace location well organized and neat at all times. Keeps paperwork and reports out of access to visitors and patients. Follows HIPAA guidelines.
Preserves stock of all trays and outpatient phlebotomy location. Each need to be totally stocked prior to next shift. Keep all trays and draw location clean after usage.
Processes send-outs prompt and properly based upon specimen and recommendation laboratory requirements. All send-out specimens gathered approximately 30 minutes prior to end of shift must be processed.
Evaluations pending reference laboratory reports for prompt reporting.
Carries out microbiology culture set-up and procedures specimens for recommendation to reference laboratory.
Actively takes part in the training and orientation of brand-new workers and other workers learning new duties.
Carries out other tasks as designated, by the Lead PT-1, CLS, Lab Supervisor, Laboratory Director.
Qualifications
1. High School Diploma, or comparable, needed
2. Current and valid state certification as a CPT I or CPT II needed.
3. Present BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and preserve present.
4. Minimum 1 year medical laboratory experience chosen
