My Life With Hemochromatosis|Getting a Phlebotomy to Reduce My Iron Overload

My Life With Hemochromatosis

Today, I take you with me on a trip to get my phlebotomy!

According to the Mayo Center:
Genetic hemochromatosis (he-moe-kroe-muh-TOE-sis) triggers your body to take in excessive iron from the food you eat. Excess iron is stored in your organs, specifically your liver, heart and pancreas. Too much iron can result in dangerous conditions, such as liver disease, heart issues and diabetes.

The genes that trigger hemochromatosis are inherited, however just a minority of individuals who have the genes ever establish severe problems. Signs and symptoms of genetic hemochromatosis usually appear in midlife.

Treatment includes regularly eliminating blood from your body. Since much of the body’s iron is included in red cell, this treatment reduces iron levels.
