Introduction

The Phlebotomy Professional I mainly carry out skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of any ages for the purpose of acquiring a blood specimen for analysis in the scientific lab and is under the supervision of Laboratory Director/ Manager/ Manager. The PT I; 1) carries out computer system information entry, filing, telephone interaction and other clerical responsibilities, 2) possesses sufficient understanding of the terms of tests ordered in the lab, 3) shows good interaction abilities and telephone etiquette in welcoming patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner, 4) shows appropriate phlebotomy method and making use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric clients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6) processes specimens for referral to reference labs, 7) stocks and orders routine supplies, 8) preserves the tidiness of storage locations, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas, 9) processes or load specimens on automated lab instrumentation in accordance with established policy and treatments, 10) May be help to Pick up samples at medical facility/ OR, assist laboratory specialty in figuring out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, stock, replenish materials, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, addressing phone, product shipments, etc. 11) other tasks or responsibilities might be designated by the department manager/director.

Responsibilities

Carries out venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all ages from newborn to geriatric in a safe, precise, and prompt way.

Gathers and processes biological specimens for lab analysis according to accepted treatment and observing proper precautions with potentially dangerous substances.

Evaluations and files orders for appropriateness. Includes evaluation and confirmation of replicate orders.

Makes sure favorable patient identification, minimum two required patient identifiers, prior to carrying out patient draw. No misidentifications are permitted.

Effectively labels blood specimens drawn with Initials (PT1 identifier), date, and time of collection on each specimen tube.

Completes blood attracts a timely way, routine – within 6 minutes, challenging cases – within 15 minutes, routine capillary leaks – within 10 minutes.

Procedures specimens instantly upon arrival in the lab and distributes to the departments.

Recognizes issues with specimens, tries to correct issue and alerts suitable workers and supervisor. Documents procedure.

Evaluations tracking display regularly and deals with pending draws

Completes any draws generated 15- minutes prior to shift modification.

Welcomes outpatients and processes them without delay (within 10 minutes of client’s arrival).

Properly gets in specimen information into computer. Medical record number, name, date and time need to be confirmed with appropriation with less than 2 date errors annually. No medical record number or name errors.

Demonstrates the appropriate usage of phlebotomy devices and safety gadgets

Keeps the phlebotomy space and office area well organized and neat at all times. Keeps documentation and reports out of access to visitors and clients. Follows HIPAA policies.

Keeps stock of all trays and outpatient phlebotomy area. Each should be completely equipped prior to next shift. Keep all trays and draw location clean after usage.

Procedures send-outs prompt and accurately based on specimen and referral laboratory requirements. All send-out specimens collected as much as 30 minutes prior to end of shift must be processed.

Reviews pending reference lab reports for timely reporting.

Performs microbiology culture set-up and procedures specimens for referral to reference laboratory.

Actively takes part in the training and orientation of new staff members and other employees learning new tasks.

Performs other duties as appointed, by the Lead PT-1, CLS, Lab Supervisor, Lab Director.

Credentials

1. High School Diploma, or comparable, required

2. Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain present.

3. Minimum 1 year scientific laboratory experience preferred
