Phlebotomy (from the Greek words phlebo-, indicating “pertaining to a blood vessel”, and -tomy, implying “to make an incision”) is the process of making an incision in a vein with a needle. The treatment itself is referred to as a venipuncture. A person who performs phlebotomy is called a “phlebotomist”, although medical professionals, nurses, medical laboratory scientists and others do portions of phlebotomy treatments in many countries.
Phlebotomists are people trained to draw blood from a patient for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, contributions, or research. Phlebotomists gather blood mostly by carrying out venipunctures, (or, for collection of minute amounts of blood, fingersticks). Blood may be gathered from infants by means of a heel stick. The responsibilities of a phlebotomist may consist of properly identifying the client, translating the tests asked for on the appropriation, drawing blood into the correct tubes with the appropriate ingredients, precisely describing the procedure to the clients, preparing patients accordingly, practicing the required types of asepsis, practicing standard and universal preventative measures, performing the skin/vein puncture, withdrawing blood into containers or tubes, bring back hemostasis of the puncture website, instructing patients on post-puncture care, buying tests per the physician’s appropriation, attaching tubes with electronically printed labels, and delivering specimens to a lab.
