The Standards for a Patient Blood Management Program (PBM Standards) can help facilities that are implementing or enhancing patient blood management efforts to have a solid foundation for maintaining and optimizing the care of patients who may or may not need transfusion. Like other AABB standards, the requirements in this edition include over-arching quality standards as well as specific technical standards – all firmly grounded in a quality systems framework. Unlike other AABB standards, the requirements in this edition are organized to reflect the wide range of clinical services offered by different hospitals. The PBM Standards acknowledges three distinct PBM program activity levels that reflect the functions an individual facility may perform.
